How to Fix Corrupt OST File?

OST (Offline Storage Table) is one of the file extensions of MS Outlook. Outlook is a managing and controlling tool that manages and controls your mailbox, tasks, contacts, documents and files. This file format allows the user to work in offline mode without connecting to the Exchange Server. By the help of this, users can easily access any data or information from anywhere at any point of time. The changes whatever made to the original file will get updated automatically once you get connected to the Exchange Server. Working without Exchange Server is offline mode whereas working in the presence of Exchange Server is online mode. The greatest advantage of this file extension is that it allows the user to work and access any information at the time when server is not responding. OST file is a replica of your user mailbox on Exchange Server. Therefore, you can easily work with OST file even if you are not connected to Exchange Server. Another most prominent advantage of OST file is that it can be used as a backup option incase if your PST file gets deleted or becomes corrupted. An OST file gets saved as .ost file format. Usually OST file is located at C:\ Documents and Settings\ username\ Local Settings\ Application Data\ Microsoft\ Outlook\ outlook.ost. Like all other file types, OST file can also get damaged under many circumstances. File corruption or damage could result in inaccessibility of important data and other critical information. The reasons which are responsible for OST file corruption are mentioned below:

Compressing OST file: In general scenario, compressing OST file is useful for storing huge sized file within a smaller space on the hard disk. But it has been observed in certain situation that compressing large size OST file is a disaster. If the compression method was not executed properly then there are more chances that file might get corrupted. Any interruption such as power failure, synchronization error or abruptly system shuts down occurs during compression method then there are possibilities that your compression process will get stuck in between and the flow of compression process will stop immediately due to which your OST file may get corrupted.

Transferring OST file from one location to another by using cut and paste option: Generally, you transfer OST file from one location to another in order to balance the available space of your system hard disk. Usually you select transfer option to transfer it from one location to another or by copying and moving it to the desired location. But in some cases, it may happen that you select cut option to transfer particular file to the desired location. Basically, huge OST file is likely to get corrupted easily if you are using cut option in order to transfer it from one place to another. It may happen that the location does not have the space to accommodate that particular file then in that case some part of your file will get transferred and some part of the file will remain back to the origin location of the file. Due to this file division, your OST file will get corrupt.

Power failure or Server shut down abnormally: Sudden power failure is a frustrating situation. It may happen that your server suddenly stops responding due to abnormal shut down or due to power failure. If this happen at the time when you are working on MS Outlook and accessing some important OST file then there are more chances that your file gets damaged severely.  Due to this your database becomes inaccessible and your OST file becomes orphan.

Human Mis-operations: Human negligence can also be one of the reasons for OST file corruption. There are many human Mis-operation factors that are accountable for OST file corruption such as Mis-partitioning the storage device, Mis-formatting the operating system etc. which will all cause the Exchange Server database unavailable and so make the OST file orphaned.

Using unreliable third party OST file recovery software: If you use unreliable and inefficient third party OST file recovery software for recovering back all lost and deleted OST file can be responsible for OST file corruption. Different-different file recovery software has different criteria for recovering any file. Suppose the file size of your corrupted file is 10GB and the application that you are using is capable of recovering only 5GB file size then in that case, the software will recover only the part of 10GB file due to which it gets corrupted and becomes unusable.
